React Native app

Urban Sports Club rebuilt their app with React Native over the last 2 years. Being the only product designer in the squad (in fact, the entire company, for a majority of the time), my role was to envision, scope out, and help deliver this "new and improved" app.

I learnt a lot from this "react-ification" project and it changed my perspective on many things design, and also non-design when it comes to product development.

Hiring peers and leaders

After joining the very small Product-Tech team as their first Product Designer, I witnessed the company go through a hyper-growth phase. There was a ton of hiring going on throughout this time, with multiple interviews scheduled in a week. I took a major part in recruiting my peer Product Designer/s and a Lead. Also being in interview panels for Product Managers, Graphics Designers and Mobile Devs, gave me a good understanding of what to look for in a colleague. We also had interview training sessions to be better at hiring. Personally, sitting through interviews helped in introspection of my own abilities and shortcomings.

Product Design Processes

When joining Urban Sports Club, I found myself in a product team of 2 (the Product Manager and I). Now, when the team started growing, we needed a process to make Product Design more proactive, rather reactive. We integrated Design tightly in a sprint-scrum method, included weekly peer reviews, monthly user sessions & documented handoff to begin with. By doing so, we increased transparency on the status of Product Design. International excellence

At the end of 2019, we started a project to understand our product's fit and usability in international markets. We set out by tightly collaborating with the all major satellite offices in Barcelona, Paris, Milan to understand member behaviour. By doing Customer Journey Mapping and Guerrilla Testing in these cities, we found a substantial difference in the thinking of our member-base from these cities. We did this to push for internationalization and localization of the product. Unfortunately, COVID halted this project as the teams started focussing on live-online classes.
