<aside> 💡 Incident Lead not enough? Want to add and create your own roles like Incident Manager, or Communications Lead? You can! Head over here to learn how.

In incident.io, roles are a first class citizen. We use them to make it clear:

Assigning roles

The easiest way to assign a role during an incident is to type /incident roles. This will bring up a modal that shows you all of the roles that you can select from, and who's currently playing them.

From here, you can select who should be playing what role. Select the correct values, and submit.

Type during an incident to view and assign roles. In this case, Stephen Whitworth is the Incident Lead, and there is no Communications Lead.

<aside> ℹ️ Power-user, and want to do this more quickly? You can! Type /inc role lead @pete to set Pete as the lead. We use the Slack reference field of the role to be able to set this.

For example, if you've created a Communications Lead role, and the Slack reference is comms, you'd be able to set yourself as the Communications Lead by typing inc role comms me.

We'll post an update into the channel to make the role assignment clear, update the announcement channel post, and reflect it on the incident homepage so everyone is kept in the loop, regardless of where they're keeping track of things.

We'll keep everything up to date for you, so you don't have to worry about communicating it outwards.

Roles and responsibilities

Incidents are stressful. We want to make it easy for people that are playing a role to know what they have to do in that role.
