Arouna Sanganté is a Senegalese centre-back, born in 2002, who has developed in France since football school. Having grown up in the Paris region, he joined the Red Star youth academy at 13 before moving directly to Le Havre AC at 15. In the port city, he experienced almost every level of French football: National 3 (5th division), then National 2 (4th division), before joining the professional squad in 2021/2022, when the club was in Ligue 2. Following promotion the next season, Arouna Sanganté began the 2023/2024 campaign as a starter in Ligue 1. Since then, aside from a few injuries, he has established himself as an undisputed starter and captain of the Le Havre side.
Standing at 1.91m, the Senegalese centre-back is far from being the most powerful, often compensating by using his arms in duels. Although he possesses a decent vertical leap, his heading often lacks power and accuracy. This weakness seems to stem from insufficient core strength, which is also noticeable in certain jumps where his body tilts rather than remaining upright. His main physical strengths lie in his pace, acceleration, and agility: he can step out quickly from the defensive line and handle one-on-one situations against wingers attempting to beat him. At times, Arouna Sanganté appears slightly unbalanced during changes of direction, with a low centre of gravity, yet he consistently manages to recover, turn quickly, and remain on his feet against his opponent. A right-footed player, he relies predominantly on his stronger foot.
In possession phases, Arouna Sanganté stands out positively, showing high availability and comfort on the ball. His first touches are clean, often controlled with the sole to set up his next action. The few technical errors he makes usually stem from minor lapses in concentration or anticipation when not under pressure. His distribution is accurate, typically playing inside to find the central midfielder, effectively breaking the first line with ground passes. He rarely attempts long balls or switches of play. Capable of operating as a right-back, he can project forward efficiently down the flank, making overlapping runs that disrupt the opponent’s press and offering a valuable presence in the final third.
Arouna Sanganté possesses genuine game-reading ability: constantly scanning between the ball and his direct opponent, he registers a high number of interceptions each season by stepping into passing lanes or poking the ball away at his opponent’s feet. This proactive approach also allows him to surprise attackers, capitalising on any loose touch with intensity and aggression. However, these same qualities can become liabilities, leading to yellow or even red cards if mistimed or poorly controlled. Limited in pure physical duels due to his frame, he often operates close to the line, using his arms and hands extensively to push opponents. Another area for improvement lies in his ability to clear dangerous balls effectively, sometimes producing sliced clearances, high hopeful balls, or risky central passes.
Having matured quickly through his internal progression at Le Havre AC—and having been handed the captain’s armband at just 19, from his very first minutes in Ligue 1—the Senegalese centre-back is a true leader who gives instructions and commands on the pitch. Arouna Sanganté plays with confidence and assurance, fully trusting in his qualities.
Arouna Sanganté perfectly matches the footballing profile we are looking for. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, he appears to be an attractive and relatively low-risk option for Olympique Lyonnais given the club’s current situation. A move to OL would also represent an excellent step forward for the Senegalese defender, who would join his compatriot Moussa Niakhaté to learn alongside him and compete in European competition.
