We’re all prodigals, and God loves prodigals

Ever feel like you’re running on empty, trying to escape your life instead of actually living it? This message dives into why we run — not just out of rebellion, but out of longing, exhaustion, and disappointment. Through the story of a runaway, we unpack regret, shame, and that moment you suddenly think, “How did I get here?” and “Can I even go back?”

It’s about remembering who you really are, not who your mistakes say you are, and discovering that you don’t have to earn your way back to love, purpose, or home.

Daily Devotions

Day 1 – Who You Are, and Whose You Are

Main Idea:

If you belong to Jesus, you are God’s child, not His slave.

Key Verse:

Luke 15:17 (NIV) – “When he came to his senses…”

In the story of the Prodigal Son, the turning point is when he “came to his senses.” He remembered who he really was: his father’s son. He had always been a son, even in the far country.

Many Christians forget this. They think of God like a harsh boss, not a loving Father. But the Bible says the Holy Spirit reminds us of our true identity.

Romans 8:15–16 (NIV) –

“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves… Rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship… The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just give power; He whispers to your heart, “You belong to the Father.”

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do you usually feel more like God’s child or God’s employee? Why?
  2. How might your choices change if you really believed, “I am loved and wanted by my Father”?
