That’s where you, too, might find a bleary-eyed, disheveled dad handing the clerk a toy while his tiny son stares up at the counter with a permagrin on his face and a bootleg Angry Birds cap on his head. The toy, too, will be Angry Birds—a real-life version of the mobile game in which you fling plastic birds at a tower of plastic blocks. Kids aren’t just playing the game, they’re living the life.
I’m not quite old enough to remember how Pac-Man fever gripped the nation in the early ’80s, but there’s no question we’re living through something similar, just with a different bright-yellow hero. Not since the time of tokens has there been a single game that ruled the zeitgeist like Angry Birds does—everyone has played it, and it’s plastered on everything from toys to food. Your mom is more likely to ask you for tips on three-starring a particular level than chide you for wasting time on videogames.
Last May, Angry Birds maker Rovio announced that the game, by then available for 10 platforms (enough for virtually every type of device with a screen on planet Earth), had been downloaded 1 billion times. Billion. In its native Finland, Angry Birds has a store and an amusement park. The Kennedy Space Center near Orlando is featuring an interactive Angry Birds exhibit. The tie-in game Angry Birds Star Wars is probably introducing more kids to Star Wars than J.J. Abrams will. And it did it all without needing to appear on a game console. Its avian-flinging, pig-smashing action was born on the iPhone, designed around a touch interface with no need for buttons. Eventually Angry Birds was brought to consoles by Activision, which announced earlier this year that it had sold a million copies for living room use. A million? A drop in the billion-download bucket! Smartphone gaming’s meteoric rise isn’t best measured in dollars, or even Zynga acquisitions, but in Angry Birds wool caps.
