Overall Interview Process & What to Expect
đź‘‹ Initial Interview
We want to get to know you and your experience, what you're looking for in your next role, and to tell you about what we're working on at Notion now and in the future. We want to make sure there's mutually a good fit. This conversation with the recruiter will be ~20 minutes.
🧨 Technical Screen
For this 60 minute interview, you will work with one of our engineers in a live SQL interview, where you will be asked to answer a series of analytical questions by querying sample data. A link to a developer environment will be shared with you at the beginning of the interview, and you will write and run your SQL statements in there. Feel free to look up syntax during your interview (we’re most interested in your problem-solving ability, not your memory).
🏡 Virtual Onsite Interviews
Dashboard Prototype (60 Mins)
- You will be asked to bring a dashboard you have created in the past. During the interview, you will walk through your thought process and design decisions, and discuss how the dashboard can drive decision-making.
- If you do not feel comfortable bringing a live dashboard, feel free to bring screenshots and present those to your interviewer. As well, you are free to obfuscate or redact any confidential numbers or details in your dashboard.
- If you’d prefer not to share previous work, you can design a lightweight dashboard with Tableau Online using the data set [Supermarket Sales Dataset on kaggle]. Building a fairly simple dashboard is completely acceptable, so please do not try to spend more than ~4 hours on this dashboard - as we want to be cognizant of your time.
Data Modeling (Data Engineering & Business Intelligence Positions Only) (60 mins)
- You'll walk through the data requirements of a hypothetical business process and learn how to translate those needs into a robust data model and a technical solution.
Cross-Functional Partnerships (30 mins)
- A non-technical stakeholder interview to understand how you approach collaborating with stakeholders on data + business problems. This interview will talk through both past experiences working with stakeholders and some hypothetical scenarios for collaborating with business teams on quantitative problems. You should feel comfortable translating a business question into a technical approach and explaining your reasoning at an appropriate level of detail.
Career History & Experience Interview (60 mins)
