Hello Peeps, Today’s post will be a tad bit shorter due to limited information.
Today, we’ll be covering Dr. Akiko Yosano from the Bungou Stray Dogs series. Dr. Yosano is the physician of the Armed Detective Agency, the protagonist party of the series. Dr. Yosano is a strong, graceful woman who is well-knowledge and quite capable of healing physical wounds. She is an adamant feminist not only believing but also enforcing, whenever she can, the equality to be men and women. She also has strong feelings about those who have no respect for the sacredness of life or strong mental fortitude.

Dr. Yosano from a young age, has been gifted with a powerful healing ability. Like many of the abilities seen from other characters in the Bungou Stray Dogs series, they are based on magnificent works from historical authors. That being said, Akiko Yosano was an actual Japanese author who lived from December 1878 to May 1942), and one of her greatest works was called 君死にたもうこと勿れ (kimi shinitamou koto nakare) also known as “Thou Shalt Not Die.” Very in turn with her character in Bungou Stray Dogs, Yosano-san was also a feminist and also quite controversial. In “Thou Shalt Not Die” Yosano-san challenged the traditional concept of Bushido, criticizing the irony of how soldiers would give their lives in service of an emperor would not do the same. In fact, this work was addressed specifically to her brother, who she felt would be caught up in the fanfare and glory of being a “human bullet” during the Russo-Japanese war of 1904. All these elements made Yosano-san very unpopular amongst the general public since she not only criticized a traditional Japanese concept but also the upper echelons of Japanese society challenging the inequalities that existed and stark differences in morality. She was quite an amazing woman.
Back to Bungou Stray Dogs, Dr. Yosano also was recruited to use her healing ability as a young child during The Great War. From that experience, she was initially known as Miss Angel and gradually came to be known as The Doctor and the Angel of Death. You might be wondering how she acquired that last nickname. That actually relates to her healing ability, believe it or not. So, the way that “Thou Shalt Not Die” works is that when she meets a patient who needs healing an array of butterflies erupts from her body and instantly heals whatever they touch. The only thing is those who are seeking care need to AT LEAST be half dead. … Yup. Her ability is actually pretty impractical for those who need to be minorly patched up. So, in cases when someone needs medical attention, she actually needs to nearly maim the person before her ability can properly heal them. The experience is so dreadful that many of her fellow coworkers at the Armed Detective Agency not only try to keep themselves as healthy as possible but also try to avoid any negative interactions with Dr. Yosano when possible. Can you imagine going to the doctor to get something like your broken bone healed and end up having to get half your body injured to get proper medical treatment? No? Exactly, because it doesn’t really make sense BUT that’s Animated Media for you lol. So, onto the fun facts!
First, Akiko Yosano is actually the original author’s pen name. Her actual name was Sho Ho (鳳 志やう).
Secondly, in addition to being an author and feminist, she was also a poet, pacifist and social reformer. What’s interesting is that while Yosano-san was a pacifist in real life, her character, Dr. Yosano, was an adept fighter, often carrying a large menacing meat cleaver for fighting.
Thirdly, Yosano was not only considered controversial for challenging bushido, but she was also a very strong advocate for female sexuality.
Lastly, it was noted in the series that Dr. Yosano believes the obituaries were the most interesting part of a newspaper due to fairness of how it judges people.
Hmm… Dr. Yosano is also another anomaly when it comes to healers. She is a physician with respect to her show, but she expertise lies in healing critically injured patients. I feel as though if she were in our society, she would be an Emergency Medicine Physician or a physician who works in the Intensive Care Unit or Critical Units. I would like to strongly emphasize that doctors do not actively try to injure their patients in order to heal their patients!! They DO NOT do this and that is just quirk related to this character!
Anyway, that’s all I got for you today folks! Have a great Friday and see you tomorrow!
