What this is

To mark two years of Lagos TUG, we are opening a pan-African data-viz competition, together with Accra TUG and Kenya TUG. Build a dashboard on a shared African dataset before the event. The best entries get reviewed live by Zainab at our anniversary meetup on 8 August, and winners are announced on the day.

Theme: The Tools are Evolving And So Are We — expanding the African frontier of Tableau + AI. Your viz should say something real about Africa, and if you can, use AI somewhere in how you build it.

Who can join

Everyone. Whether you are in Lagos, Accra, Nairobi or anywhere else, and whether you are new to Tableau or seasoned, you are welcome. Entries are individual. You do not need to attend in person to win; virtual winners get their prizes sent to them.

The dataset

You will work from one shared dataset: African Heads of State. It covers roughly 106 leaders across the continent, usually the first post-independence leader and the current incumbent for each country.

What is in it: country, leader, gender, age at inauguration, dates in and out of office, tenure, how they took power, how they left, whether they were the first post-independence leader, administration type, leadership background, and more.

Angles to explore:

• Elections vs coups: how leaders take power, and how it has shifted over time
• Longevity in power: who holds on longest, by region or era
• How leaders leave: coup, death in office, resignation, term end
• Age at inauguration: youngest vs oldest
• Gender representation across the continent
• Leadership backgrounds: soldiers, lawyers, businesspeople, physicians
• First post-independence leaders vs today
