ABOUT THIS COURSE

How do films, television, and digital media convey meaning, generate emotions, and tell stories? What role do moving images play in our sense of self, culture, and community? These are some of the questions we’ll be exploring this semester, as we watch and analyze film, TV, remix videos, and digital culture. This course is designed to improve your ability to watch, reflect on, and write about moving images. You’ll find all the details of the course on this website. Questions? Email me, your prof, at [email protected].

WEEKLY SCHEDULE

We'll follow a weekly schedule as follows:

EXPECTATIONS & POLICIES

PARTICIPATION

This class is a discussion-oriented class. Attendance and participation are a key part of the class. Your presence & engagement shapes the class experience and greatly contributes to your and your classmate’s learning. Please come to class having done the readings, ready to engage and participate. Participation in this class means both speaking and active listening, as well as providing peers with thoughtful feedback on their work and ideas. I do not have a strict technology-use policy for during class time (i.e. use of phones, tablets, and computers), but please be mindful of staying present and engaged with the class and your classmates.

MISSED CLASS

We will not have an ongoing zoom option; if you need to miss more than two classes because of health or personal issues, please reach out to both your dean and to me to make arrangements. When you miss class, please connect with a classmate to get their notes/find out what you missed. I’m also happy to meet with you during my office hours.

LATE WORK

Late work will be marked down by half a grade a week. You will always get at least half credit, no matter how late you turn something in. I always think its better to engage in the work, even if late, than not at all, but at the same time, I don’t want you to get bogged down with late work.

LEARNING SUPPORT

I want to hear about your learning needs and preferences, so that I can make sure you have what you need. If you have a learning difference or concern of any kind that might impact your participation in this class, please communicate with me as soon as possible. For formal accommodations, please be sure to contact the Disability Resource Center (formerly the ADA Office).Links to an external site.

SCREENINGS:

Each week we will have a screening of television, film, or digital media, that we will consider through the lens of our course foci. These screenings will generally be around 2 hours long, sometimes slightly longer if we watch three episodes of television.
