⚛️ Overview

Recent quantum experiments have opened up the path toward thermodynamic applications at the quantum regime, where traditional resources, such as heat and work, can be combined with genuine quantum effects, such as quantum coherence and quantum correlations. The construction of a complete framework for describing thermodynamics at the quantum regime has been a subject of intense interest in the last decade. Building upon the recent advances in Quantum Information Theory, the theory aims to formulate the laws of thermodynamics operationally, in terms of what are the allowed set of processes and the allowed set of resources that are consumed or generated. The prospects of this new and exciting field have already been tested in several coherent quantum experiments, opening the way to genuine and novel applications in the micro-world.

This mini-course aims to present the student to the ideas that are at the frontier of knowledge in this field. The course will be based on a series of 8 online lectures, taught by two young specialists in the field, Dr. Nicole Yunger Halpern and Dr. Matteo Lostaglio. The course is intended for Masters and PhD students, and will require only basic knowledge in Quantum Information Theory and Statistical Physics.

The course will have a particular focus on the resource-theoretic formulation of quantum mechanics and how it can be extended to thermodynamics. More familiar results, such as the celebrated Fluctuation Theorems, will also be reviewed, with a specific focus on their connection with one-shot information theory. Finally, the links between Thermodynamics and Contextuality, one of the key concepts in the foundations of Quantum Theory, will also be discussed.

✅ Course format and pre-requisites

The course will be based on 9 online lectures, one per day, from 2pm to 4pm (GMT), during the 2 weeks from Nov. 23rd to Dec. 4th. The only day without lectures will be Thursday, Nov. 26, since it is Thanksgiving.
