*to be clear, that was a joke. If they had a serious grindset mindset then they would have strategised a hostile takeover of the franchise before the starters came.
- Making fun of business school students is a classic part of university life. Haha those students have like 8 contact hours a week, try doing a real degree.
- At least from my personal experience, the students that tended to do the best post university were the ones that realised that university itself was just a networking and skill building opportunity
- I wish this was made more explicit but the purpose of MBA programs isn’t actually to learn business administration (you can probably do that better online - Crash Course Business: Entrepreneurship - YouTube), it is to make connections and find potential cofounders.
- I think the teaching wasn’t great but there was explicit encouragement to go out and start something. We had a management development programme that (while we made fun of how wishy washy it was at the time) actually was pretty good at teaching emotional intelligence, self awareness and communication skills. If you’re curious I recommend checking out the course contents for years 2 and 3 of my degree here: BA Hons Accounting & Finance Degree, UK | University of Strathclyde
- The EA consulting network is great - I think a huge number of their resources are useful to anyone with a business background
- However, consulting - until about 2 years ago (after finishing my degree!!!), I didn’t have a good idea of what “consulting” was. My perception is that this is common and is related to social class and is a form of cultural capital.
- It is basically being a generalist that can be hired to fill in the gaps at a company
- Hiring a new person is expensive, hiring consultants for a short period of time may be cheaper (cost/day is higher but no employment costs)
- Sometimes you want someone external to come in and do the analysis to justify a decision you want to make - like firing 20% of your workforce
- Management consulting is where you do the above but make really really nice powerpoints justifying why you cost so much
- Same thing with strategy, when you google strategy it is really vague so for a while I thought, oh I couldn’t do that.
- Strategy is just planning!!!!
- I think it is good the EA currently selects for thinker but there’s a lot of problems that need solving so potentially what we need are more doers
