Press Myths to Understand First
- A bigger budget for press or marketing only means a bigger scale, but the principles/actions you take are basically the same
- Press will not discover a film, rather it will amplify something that already has momentum
- you have to start with the core of “what is my story and how does this culturally resonate with the audience?”
- press shouldn’t feel like a cold ask
Ways to Generate Press-Worthy Momentum
- Guerrilla stunt: these are things you can do at a small scale
- Get earned media by making is “discuss-able”
- Event based: Get into events that the press will cover anyway and give them something to write about
- Community: Build up momentum and narrative around your source material
- Partnerships: Who else (besides you) wants your story to be told?
Is there one that you could do that would generate 80% of results? Is there one you should do first?
- Go through a prioritization process of what will bring impact and what you have the bandwidth to fully see through.
- Old ideas are not bad ideas, but you can have imperfect timing
- Have some urgency: what makes your film relevant RIGHT NOW
- Try five ideas, and then evaluate the effort you put in vs. the pay off you got out of it
- Remember, some ideas are great, but they’re time dependent. So timing is just as important as the good idea.
