One of the simpler frameworks to start your relationship off the right way. And you can do this in a consistent matter fairly easily.
Pro tips
Welcome newcomers publicly
Welcome newcomers in a transparent way, where all community members can witness it and welcome them too. It's a great way for new people to feel acknowledged.
- Keep things human – e.g. avoid 'bots' welcoming new people.
- Consider welcoming new users in batch on a weekly basis. The cadence depends on the size and growth of your community. Welcoming every single user separately may crowd a channel-based community platform too much.
- Make it easy to start engaging for new members. Start with a simple but fun question that is quick to answer. You can intensify later. Don't ask a gazillion questions right away.
- Mention every new user in this batch – this assures that they get notified
Welcoming newcomers via DM
Welcoming newcomers via a 1:1 DM gives you a chance to connect with every new member right away + address important logistics – such as setting a profile pic.
- Ask newcomers to set a profile picture – this makes your community more human
- Stimulate a really short introduction in an #introductions channel
- Stimulate feedback/questions to you as a moderator – be careful if you're community is growing big and you're the only one sending out DMs.
Welcome newcomers via email
Welcoming newcomers via email might be a complementary thing that helps you summarize some logistics and community guidelines.
