Most people do one prompt and move on. Top 1% treat every first response as a rough draft.
Here is the real loop:
| Step | What to Actually Do |
|---|---|
| Step 1: First pass | Use your structured 6-layer prompt. Get the output. Read the entire response before reacting. |
| Step 2: Gap identification | Ask yourself: What did it miss? What assumption is wrong for my specific situation? What is too vague to be useful? |
| Step 3: Targeted refinement | Name the gap explicitly. "Your answer assumed I have 3 months. I have 3 days. Revise with that constraint." Do NOT say "make it better." |
| Step 4: Challenge | Ask it to argue against its own answer. "What is the strongest reason this advice is wrong?" |
| Step 5: Synthesis | Ask it to merge the original answer and the counter into one nuanced position. |
| Step 6: Extract | "What is the single most important takeaway from everything we have discussed?" Lock in the output before moving on. |
Never accept a first output as final for anything important.
The difference between a mediocre AI user and an excellent one is almost entirely in what happens AFTER the first response.
