“[…] they were shedding items, or to be precise, items were trailing from them like the intestines of a mangy dog that had been run down by a car […]”

METAPHORS

Visual metaphors provide a simple solution to most conceptual assignments, and hence should be treated with a healthy degree of suspicion.

Thinking “outside the box” is best achieved when each corner of the box is first thoroughly examined. Allow your boring ideas to be sketched out, they may lead to something less boring.

Whatever text you get, whether it's an editorial piece, a poem or a craigslist ad, try to analyze and dissect the style, go beyond the subject matter, characters and message—use punctuation, repetition and other peculiarities of the author's voice to inform your artistic decisions in adapting or interpreting the text.

ASSIGNMENT 4: ILLUSTRATION TO A TEXT

Read the given pieces and write down word associations and initial ideas.

Pick one of the stories and make at least 3-4 sketches with 1-2 sentence explanations of the concept.
