You need a writing tool and whichever one helps you the most should be in your arsenal. I use multiple tools.
Notepad is missing so many useful tools. It can’t even get a word count and I often want one. I like having spell check and some other useful writerly features.
You want features. If you are just starting out, you probably want your software as cheap as possible. Like free, when you can get it.
I use yWriter, after someone pointed it out to me. Before that I was using Evernote. I also use grammarly because I’d rather have a robot do the first pass on checking my garbage drafts.

“Special” software? Not that I know of. We vary, but most writers I know use ordinary off-the-shelf word processors. MS Word is very common — common enough that editors are sometimes surprised I don’t have it. I use WordPerfect, and I know several other writers who do, as well. Open Office is also popular; it’s a free imitation of Microsoft Office, and has lots of useful features, but in my experience it’s too slow — when I’m really rolling it can’t keep up with my typing, and it seems to take forever to boot up.
