“For me the number three is important, but simply from the numerical, not the esoteric, point of view: one is unity, two is double, duality, and three is the rest.”

Marcel Duchamp

COMMUNICATION WITH AN ART DIRECTOR

Clear communication is essential to the practice of illustration.

Art Directors can get hundreds of emails a day, so your letters should be brief, concise and clear.

A typical email with sketches can look something like this:

“Hello/hi/dear (depending on your relationship with the AD) {name},
Here are the sketches for {the assignment}, please let me know what you think!

(optional: I tried to focus on the theme of {something} and {something} via {something})

{Description of the each concept (1-2 sentences)}

(the descriptions can be set in the image itself)

(optional: any further comments on the final finish/medium, deadlines, etc)

Regards/thanks/best/etc {your name}”

ASSIGNMENT 4: THE ASSIGNMENT ABOUT COMPOSITION

Using the given shapes, make three illustrations, one in each of the three formats presented below. Use at least two of the shapes in each illustrations, ideally all of them.

The grids can be flipped, the shapes can be stretched, interpreted or arranged in any fashion.

The pieces should be executed in black & white with no grays, half-tones or washes, focusing on composition and design.

The three pieces should make sense together, narratively, conceptually or in both ways.

The finals can be any size, as long as they retain the proportions of the grids.
