2-3 times faster wound healing observed

“When I came into contact with Elemental, they introduced me to a polymer containing zinc - and explained to me this polymer potentially could have wound healing properties. Not really believing this, we tried to test this in a few of our patients, as a kind of surgical dressing after palatal graft surgery. And we noticed an extremely rapid wound healing. A wound healing which is 2 times, 3 times as fast as I would normally expect for this type of surgery.”

Ease of use & versatility

“Next to that, and that made me even more excited, is the ease of using this polymer, where you can simply dissolve it in hot water and it becomes some kind of plasticine. You can mold it, you make different forms from it, and apply it easily to the palate of the patient.

That makes it very modular for which techniques and which types of surgery you can use this polymer. So I’m really looking forward to see clinical studies that confirm the initial observations we see in our patients. I’m really looking forward to working more with this product and see the limits of this polymer - but as far as I see it at this moment, we did not reach the limit of what is possible with this plasticine type of polymer.”

About Prof. Wim Teughels

Prof. Wim Teughels is Head of the Periodontology & Oral Microbiology Department at KU Leuven University, Belgium. Besides treating patients, a major part of his work is dedicated to research focused on modulating the oral microbiome using probiotics and other techniques to balance the oral ecology, rather than killing the oral ecology.

Prof. Teughels has published over 180 scientific papers, has been lecturing all over the world, and is an associate editor in the Journal of Periodontal Research and the Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology.
