The United Kingdom has a deeply rooted debt problem: In 2019, 318 people a day were declared insolvent or bankrupt - this is equivalent to one person roughly every 4 minutes! 12.8 million households have less than £1,500 in savings, and 4.8 million households live without at least one essential household appliance (fridge, freezer, washing machine, etc.).
At the same time, the way companies collect debt is deeply broken - it is an analogue, one-size-fits-all approach that does not take the individuals circumstances into consideration. Today, debt collectors still use aggressive tactics to engage with consumers over letters or phone calls, while most of us have moved to digital channels such as WhatsApp or iMessage.
Ophelos takes a radically different approach: We treat people with compassion, empathy and respect while allowing them to manage debts on their own accords. Our focus is on reimagining the customer experience by interacting with households through digital platforms and truly supporting them on their journey to become debt-free and beyond.
We are a team of researchers, engineers and business leaders experienced in the fields of academic research, artificial intelligence and enterprise software technology. Before Ophelos, our team pioneered tech-solutions across enterprises and academia, for companies like Oracle, Monzo and IBM, and academic institutions such as Oxford University, the University of Amsterdam and the University of Hong Kong.
We are backed by two of Europe's leading VC funds, who have supported technology companies such as Citymapper, Curve, TrueLayer, and Wayve.
