Purpose

Write clear, effective prompts that get useful output from ChatGPT on the first try. Stop wasting time rewriting vague prompts or editing terrible AI output.

Scope

This SOP covers the basics of prompt writing for business tasks. Use this before you start building a library of reusable prompts.

Applies to ChatGPT but also works with Claude, Gemini, and most text-based AI tools.

Procedure

Step 1: Be specific about what you want

Vague prompts get vague results.

Vague:

"Write a social media post."

Specific:

"Write a 150-word LinkedIn post explaining why small business owners should start with one AI tool instead of trying five at once. Conversational tone. Include a question at the end to encourage comments."

Step 2: Give context about your role and audience

AI doesn't know who you are or who you're writing for unless you tell it.

Add this:

• Your role (consultant, coach, designer, etc.)
• Your audience (small business owners, entrepreneurs, etc.)
• Your business focus (AI education, websites, coaching, etc.)

Example:

"I'm a small business consultant who helps service-based entrepreneurs use AI without getting overwhelmed. My audience is coaches and consultants who want simple, practical guidance."
