Development

Four And More is a little spin-off of my bigger game TETRA.

One time, during yoga classes, my mind went a little bit too far and the whole practice suddenly revolved around one question - How, with the lowest effort possible, can I make a new game out of game mechanics of Tetra? After the end of the class, the answer was right in front of me.

In the hindsight, Tetra’s special ability cells (pulling, swapping, removing etc.) felt to me a little bit out of place. They were useful from time to time, but didn’t truly align with the core of the experience. But the mechanics seemed to have a potential for their own game.

For the development of Four And More, I gave myself strict restrictions - remake it in a few hours and don’t add anything. It’s tempting, believe me, to expand the idea the more you make it. Once you tested it out, new better ideas came to mind and you see how the game could like by adding just a little more. By saying no, you eventually end up with worse game that is yet to see its full potential.

But deep down you know, that this “small changes” mean restructuring the whole project and your decision to recycle instead of making a new product was there for a reason. But maybe the time will come and something like Five And Six will come to life.
