길 하나를 사이에 둔 익선동, 낙원동, 돈의동은 고유한 역사적 성격을 지닌 채 공존하나, 각자에게만 허용된 폐쇄적 거실로 남겨져 상호작용(Exchange)이 부재한 파편화된 생태계를 형성한다. 본 프로젝트는 이질적인 조직이 충돌하는 경계 지대인 에코톤의 개념을 빌려, 각 지역의 정체성을 유지한 채 기능적으로 엮어내는 연합 체계인 ‘Ecotonic Association’을 제안한다.

세 동이 교차하는 지점의 기존 건물들을 지역의 다양성을 투영하는 페르소나(Persona)로 정의했다. 도서관 시스템을 기반으로 북유럽 대사관의 펠레슈스(Felleshus)처럼 식사와 교제가 교차하는 왁자지껄한 공적 거실을 지향하며, 익선동은 비상업적인 교육 시설로, 낙원동은 사라진 탑골공원의 공공성을 잇는 바둑 공간으로, 돈의동은 무료급식소의 서사를 계승하는 공동체 레스토랑으로 성격을 반전시켜 지역의 새로운 거점을 형성한다.

광장의 보이드(Void) 공간 위 2층 레벨에 공중 매스를 삽입하고 기존 건물들을 램프와 코어로 연결하여, 지상의 흐름을 보존하는 동시에 상부의 공간적 공존을 구현했다. 기존 골조를 유지하며 삽입된 구조 체계는 과거의 맥락 위에, 배경이 다른 이들이 마주하는 개방적인 플랫폼이 된다. 이는 인위적인 혼합이 아닌 강요되지 않은 만남의 환경을 조성함으로써 종로에 결여되었던 진정한 공공성의 회복을 목표로 한다.

Ikseon-dong, Nakwon-dong, and Donui-dong coexist with distinct historical identities, yet they remain as fragmented urban ecosystems—isolated “living rooms” where genuine exchange is absent. By adopting the concept of the Ecotone—a transitional zone where differing organisms collide—this project proposes the ‘Ecotonic Association’: a collaborative system that weaves these neighborhoods together functionally while preserving their inherent identities.

The existing buildings at the junction serve as Personas reflecting the site’s diversity. Grounded in a library-centric system and inspired by the Felleshus of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin, the project envisions a dynamic public living room where dining and social interaction intersect. The characters of each site are strategically inverted to form regional anchors: Ikseon-dong becomes an non-commercial educational facility; Nakwon-dong restores Tapgol Park’s publicness through Baduk; and Donui-dong hosts a community restaurant, succeeding the soup kitchen’s legacy.

To achieve adaptive reuse, a floating mass is inserted at the second level over the square’s Void, connecting the existing structures via ramps and cores. This intervention preserves ground-level flow while enabling spatial coexistence above. Respecting original frames, the structural system serves as an open platform where diverse individuals converge upon a foundation of historical context. Rather than forced mixing, the design fosters unforced encounters, aiming to restore the authentic publicness absent in Jongno.
