Skin is the largest organ of our body, The total skin surface of an adult ranges from 12 to 20 square feet. With the exception of the skeleton muscles, it is also said to be the heaviest organ of the body, comprising about 15% of the body weight.
Skin is the first point of contact and works as the interface between the outside world and the inner body. It is made of different cells and components that work together to bring out certain functions for our body. We shall be learning about these cells, processes and functions in days to come, but today let’s look at our skin and why is it so important to us.
When we look at our skin in microscopic view, we see that our skin is basically made of different layers, stacked one upon the other. In total, we can see 7 layers in most of the body part, but it’s only in the palm of our hand and soul of our feet that we have one more extra layer.
Three major layers of the skin are -
Epidermis - The outermost layer Dermis - The Second Layer Hypodermis - Bottomost Layer
It is the outermost layer of the skin. It is divided into 4 layers and in some places 5 layers, comprising of different cells. The upper layer is made up of dead skin cells
and a mixture of lipids that protect the body. It is on this layer we apply our skincare products. This is the layer we see, feel and touch.
The dermis is the second layer of the skin. It is comparatively bigger than Epidermis and just one single layer. It houses skin components like sebaceous glands, sweat glands, blood vessels, collagen etc. It is said to be the water house of the skin.
