3-D Secure is a protocol developed by Visa to improve the security of online payments. The protocol is offered with the service name ‘Visa Secure’. MasterCard & Verve have also adapted a similar protocol called ‘MasterCard Identity Check’ & Verve Safetoken respectively.

They are designed to allow authentication of cardholders by their Issuers at participating online merchants.

3-D Secure systems recreate the high level of security of a physical payment environment by requesting further payment authentication.

The objective is to provide a safe and secure online payment experience across all three domains using a password or an OTP that is validated by the card issuer and further checked by all other parties involved in the transaction.
