“[…] they were shedding items, or to be precise, items were trailing from them like the intestines of a mangy dog that had been run down by a car […]”

METAPHORS

Visual metaphors provide a simple solution to most conceptual assignments, and hence should be treated with a healthy degree of suspicion.

Thinking “outside the box” is best achieved when each corner of the box is first thoroughly examined. Allow your boring ideas to be sketched out, they may lead to something less boring.

You can’t spell “hedge fund manager” without “fun,” but neither can you spell it without “hedge fund manager.” No matter how unconventional or loose, the connection between the subject and the drawing should remain clear.

If you don’t intend to work in editorial illustration, a good understanding of conceptual thinking is an invaluable asset in any artistic practice, not to mention that quick thinking and considered editing can be applied anywhere.

ASSIGNMENT 3: CONCEPTUAL ILLUSTRATION

Read the given articles and write down word associations and initial ideas.

Pick one of the stories and make at least 3-4 sketches with 1-2 sentence explanations of the concept.

Format: 4 x 6” vertical or horizontal.
