FACT

Objective biography is borderline impossible. We have at our disposal a few facts, a lot of conjecture, and an infinity of interpretation. Therefore, in writing a biographical account, the style and presence of the narrator is as important as the information about the subject.

ASSIGNMENT 3: BIOGRAPHY

Do a one-page adaptation of an episode in someone's life. It can be a well-known story, or something known only to you. The story can cover a minute, or an entire lifetime, as long as it succeeds in portraying the person in a convincing and original manner.

Possible directions:

• a monologue or a scene from the life of an artist (Ivan Brunetti on Mondrian, Catherine Meurisse on Proust)

• a humorous interpretation of an episode in a famous artist's life

• a single image representing the person, with a written caption

• an interpretation of a rumor, or an anecdote

• an openly fictionalized story involving the person, that does however stay true to the person's work and life

• a personal essay about the person

• an visual introduction to an event in someone's life, or their entire life

• a direct adaptation of someone's words, spoken or written
