The "Long War" is over. The people of the System are tired. They just want to have fun and play.
Its post-war leadership is a Triumverate: The "Fosters", The Delegates and The Lightmakers.
The "Fosters" are the latest iteration of A.I., The Delegates are the representatives and administrators, The Lightmakers are the builders of the 'Verse - the Infrastructure and Metaverses of the System. The "Whole'Verse" are the collective Metaverses of the System.
After the Long War ended, The Fosters determined that the best use of the surviving post-war infrastructure of the System would be the "Grand Halt" and "Great Upload" - an end to expenditures not related to creating a completely virtual society. There would be a "Halt" to all other plans, including the launch of the DeepShips, a class of deep spaceships, made from hollowed out asteroids. The Great Shipbuilders were denied the stars.
There would be a System-wide vote, "The Grand Vote", held in 2X80, that would be recorded on the 'Verse's "Whole'Chain" for the "Grand Halt'. A multi-decade process to upload society into a new 'Verse begins.
One of the great minds of this age, John Cadmus, credited as the father of "The Manifold", a reality-changing technology that could manipulate space-time itself, opposes the "Grand Halt". Cadmus wants to stop the Great Upload - warning that the System would be endangered and billions of lives would be lost.
During the final years of the Long War, manifold technology was tested for military purposes against Cadmus' wishes. A son of a colleague is killed. As the Long War ends, Cadmus creates a next generation human, the "ALEPs" (Autonomous Learning Entity Programs) with the hope that manifold technology can be used safely to create an alternative to the 'Verse as one of the possible safe use cases. But it's too late.
Nothing happens as planned.
