About me
Food is more than just flavors-it's a journey through culture, history, and tradition. My name is Rei Yokoyama, born in Penang Malaysia and now living in Japan.
Growing up surrounded by the rich culinary heritage of Malaysia, I fell in love with the intricate balance of spices, the harmony of sweet, sour, and savory, and the vibrant tales behind each recipe. From the aromatic Nasi Lemak (a fragrant coconut rice dish wrapped in banana leaf) to the bold, complex flavors of Nyonya Laksa (a Peranakan noodle soup with a rich coconut broth), I believe that food is a way to connect people to memories, traditions, and new experiences.
For me cooking is …….
For me, cooking is preserving heritage, one dish at a time-where every spice tells a story, and every meal is a celebration of culture.
I learned to cook at….
I learned to cook at my father's restaurant in Penang, where the sizzle of the wok and the scent of spices were my first teachers.
Standing by his side, I absorbed the art of Malaysian cuisine-from the fiery depths of curry pastes to the delicate balance of Nyonya dishes.
Years later, working in Tokyo's corporate world, I craved the flavors of home. That longing reignited my passion, and now, I bring those cherished recipes to life-sharing the taste and stories of Malaysia, one dish at a time.
My secret in the kitchen….
The 'wok hei'-that smoky, fiery breath of the wok-can't be rushed. But more than that, it's the balance of ' lemak' (creamy richness) and ' pedas' (spicy heat), the harmony of sweet, sour, and umami that makes each dish sing. Now in Japan, far from Penang's bustling markets, I recreate these flavors with the same care-because every meal should taste like a homecoming.
