Previously proposed Roadmap: FilCrypto Summary Roadmap

Current Halo2 status: FilCrypto has taken the Halo2 integration, implementation and circuit rewrites and optimizations as far as we can reasonably take it without recursive circuit features.  With the failure of ECC to deliver the recursive circuit features required for our ideal rollout of the Halo2 proving system (and with the understanding that it’s not clear if and when they will be delivered), FilCrypto is tasked with finding alternative systems that offer similar benefits while also shifting focus on other areas of the Protocol that are in demand.

Having recently analyzed the current signals and their most likely added benefits, we propose the following split of team focus, given the circumstances:

Shift From the Halo2 Proving System to the Nova Proving System

[Estimated evaluation period of 4-8 weeks; 1-2 team member dedicated; Estimated time to ship before this deeper evaluation: Q2/Q3; Goal for evaluation: a decision on viability in Filecoin Proofs with a concrete timeline to ship]

Support for this focus:

• The Nova recursive proving system has been the team favored mitigation to Halo2 for some time
• Much of the work that went into the Halo2 code re-factors are also required for the Nova proving system and can be reused
• Nova shares support for the same curves (Pasta) already integrated during preparation for Halo2 (i.e. currently existing Vanilla Proofs code is largely already compatible with Nova)
• Nova should be able to mostly reuse existing GPU support
• The Lurk team has working knowledge of the Nova proving system
