YC Partner Tim Brady covers the importance of building a strong and coherent culture early and shares six things that you can do now to help you create a solid foundation for your startup.

tldr; It's not too early to start building culture today; Go through these thought experiments with your co-founder

• Culture = behavior
  • When done right, they inform your employees how to behave when it hasn't been explicitly said to them
  • The right behaviors support a good business
• You might feel like culture is something not worthing thinking about when you're an early stage company b/c you have so many other things to do. But, Culture is impt b/c the behavior of the first few ppl you have onboard will SCALE as your company scales
• 6 things you can do now:

  1. Be proud of the problem you are solving

     • Don't chase things for vanity/ego (will come to bite you when things get hard)

  2. Create a long term vision that others will follow (North Star)

  3. List your values then model the behavior

     

     Ex: Spotify

     

     Ex: Atlassian

  4. Align your culture with your customer (having it externally focused)

     1. Ex: Google — "Don't be evil"
     2. vs Facebook ("move fast and break things"— this is internally focused)

  5. Discuss the importance of diversity to your company

     1. especially a diversity of opinions —> helps people be more creative
     2. You can't have a diversity of employees at 100 ppl, so start early!

  6. Put a hiring process into practice. Evolve it.
