Hello! I simply wanted to post my experience with Aegean Airlines Chios Airport. The airport itself is small and somewhat under-equipped with amenities, yet it is more than sufficient for shorter domestic flights. Aegean's personnel were highly cooperative and ensured boarding went smoothly and efficiently. The flight was clean, and I felt secure throughout the trip. I like the attention to detail and the friendly Greek hospitality. If you are flying from or to Chios, Aegean is definitely a safe bet. Everything worked out perfectly, and I was actually impressed by their professionalism. Strongly recommend flying with them!

Flying into the Heart of the Aegean: Aegean Airlines at Chios Airport

Nestled in the eastern Aegean Sea, just a stone’s throw from the Turkish coast, lies the enchanting Greek island of Airlines. Known for its medieval villages, mastic trees, and rich maritime history,  Airlines is a destination that captivates the imagination of travelers seeking a more authentic Greek island experience. At the center of this connection to the outside world stands Chios Island National Airport  a small but vital hub that plays a key role in keeping the island linked with the mainland and beyond. And when it comes to air travel here, Aegean Airlines is the undisputed gateway to the skies.

Chios: An Underrated Gem

Before diving into the airline operations, it’s worth understanding why Chios is a destination worth flying to. Unlike the more famous Cycladic islands like Santorini or Mykonos Airlines offers a quieter, less commercialized Greek experience. Visitors are drawn to the medieval villages of Mesta and Pyrgi, the ancient Nea Moni Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and the unique cultivation of mastiha – a resin with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status used in everything from cosmetics to liqueurs. With its rugged coastline, untouched beaches, and layered history, deserves better accessibility. That’s where Aegean Airlines steps in.

Chios Island National Airport (JKH): Small But Strategic

Chios Airport, officially named Chios Island National Airport “Omiros”, is located about 3 km south of Chios Town (Chora). It’s a modest facility by international standards, featuring a single asphalt runway (01/19) and a compact terminal building. Yet, despite its size, it plays a crucial role in regional connectivity, especially for residents and tourists alike.Due to its proximity to both Athens and other Aegean islands, Chios Airport acts as a connector—not only for domestic travelers but also for international visitors who often transit via Athens.

Aegean Airlines: Connecting Chios to the World

Aegean Airlines, Greece’s largest and most awarded airline, operates frequent services between Chios and Athens International Airport (ATH), offering a lifeline for the island. This short-haul route, typically around 45 to 55 minutes in duration, is the main air connection between Chios and the mainland.Through this Athens link, Aegean enables seamless connectivity to dozens of European cities and beyond. Whether you’re flying in from London, Munich, Paris, or Tel Aviv, getting to Chios often means transiting through Athens on a reliable Aegean-operated flight.

Frequency and Fleet

Aegean’s flights to Chios are operated by its regional subsidiary, Olympic Air, using turboprop aircraft such as the ATR 42/72. These aircraft are ideally suited for shorter runways like the one at Chios Airport. Flight frequencies vary by season, with multiple daily departures in summer and reduced schedules in the quieter winter months. This seasonal adjustment reflects the island’s tourism cycles, but even in off-peak months, the route remains a vital service for locals needing to travel for work, healthcare, or education.

The Travel Experience

Though Chios Airport isn’t lavish, the travel experience is typically smooth and efficient. Due to the airport’s small size, check-in and security processes are quick, often allowing travelers to arrive just an hour before departure without worry.Onboard Aegean flights, even short domestic hops benefit from the airline’s signature hospitality. Expect friendly crew, a complimentary snack or drink, and efficient service—even on the brief Athens–Chios leg.Once at Chios, luggage is usually out within minutes, and ground transport is just a few steps from the terminal doors. Taxis and car rentals are available, and with the airport’s close proximity to the main town, you can be at your hotel or beachside within 10 to 15 minutes of landing.

Why Aegean Stands Out

There are several reasons why Aegean Airlines has become synonymous with quality travel in Greece:

  1. Punctuality – Aegean consistently ranks high for on-time performance, an important factor when dealing with short connection windows.
  2. Network Integration – Aegean’s seamless connection with Star Alliance partners opens up international booking convenience, baggage transfers, and lounge access for eligible travelers.
  3. Service Excellence – The airline is known for its professional cabin crew, thoughtful service, and strong safety record.
  4. Flexible Fares – With a range of ticket options from Light to Flex, travelers can choose what works best for them, whether it's a carry-on-only fare or full flexibility with checked bags and changes included.
